Youth Program Description
The progression from Exploration to Project Team to Business Internship is a unique opportunity based on a demand driven model to align industry needs with the training process of Arts Street. It allows for jointly cultivating a workforce with the community that marries creativity with knowledge and discipline.
Stage 1: Explorer Projects are investigative projects that range from 4 to 15 sessions. Youth begin at Arts Street through these projects to learn new skills by focusing studio art techniques and core academics (reading, writing, math) toward research, analysis and technology for the purpose of exploring new media and their career potentials.
Stage 2: Customer Project Teams are comprehensive job-training to youth through hands-on engagement involving 15-17 young people, ages 14-21 to work as a team. By using arts medium as a tool, and combined with critical thinking and scientific research, the team will respond to perimeters set by Arts Street Sponsors. They will identify the problem, propose solutions, develop and complete the product for the client within the allowable budget and time line of the 7 to 8 week summer work session. Youth receive an hourly wage and they work as apprentices to professional artists and partner organizations of Arts Street.
Stage 3: Business Internships are individual situations that give youth a chance to job-shadow in a commercial environment for them to compare school, training to real life. Youth are further matched with appropriate businesses in paid or non-paid Internship situations to learn industry skills and etiquettes.
